Cactus Peach interview @ Aj&dbs

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 1:35 AM

- Artist Name & Location = Cactus Peach. Austin, Texas

- How did the project come into existence? = Cactus Peach was born in a barn in the summer of 2008. Our first practice was difficult as we had to run an extension chord to the barn for electricity. The group soon moved into a small room inside the house. The following year Zane moved into a house with a basement, and that became one of the main practice spaces which our first LP Eat was written and recorded.

- Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it? = Cactus Peach has fluctuated in number over the years (adding and subtracting folks) and due to this, we prefer to think of ourselves more like a "family" of inactive and active members. Cactus Peach currently consists of the original lineup of Zane Zor, Michael Bain, Garret Bircher, and Michael Frels, minus Micah Stroup. Other Inactive members include Ryan Neal and Dylan Neal, whom are on a long and possibly permanent stead in Hollywood. To keep things fresh, we're what has been called a “switch band”, allowing all four of our members to rotate throughout our performance to different instruments in which we're proficient in.

- How would you describe your sound/genre? = Cactus Peach's music has been described as "Celine Dion on Psychedelics" .

- What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have? = When Dylan and Ryan were actively gigging we had three formally trained members and three informally trained members. After the two Neal bros went to Hollywood for film work, that put the band at three informally trained and one formally trained (Michael Frels). Frels is also a Recording/Sound Engineer Major from the University of Texas. ; )

- Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album? = Cactus Peach worked with Steve Krause on our previous debut album Eat when it came to finally mixing and mastering the record. Zane recorded and engineered majority of the songs, and he and Frels collaborated on the final track of the album "Victory" on production and engineering. Krause's level of experience really helped get Eat, sonically, where it needed to be. He took Zane's rough and dirty garage recordings and polished them to a level that really brought all the color of the music to the forefront of the mix. Cactus Peach's upcoming single & the Cosmic Cowboys features three songs of live feed studio recordings engineered and produced by Michael Frels in the University of Texas' recording studio. Zane is currently doing a secondary mix of the album after Frels' preliminary mix. Cactus Peach is currently writing their second LP with a yet undecided title. They are planning on recording the album at Corpus Christi Studios in Austin, Texas with musician, engineer and long time friend Will Patterson.

- Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music? = We are all enormous fans of The Beach Boys and Animal Collective....on that note, finally SMiLE has been released an Brian and company can get credit for their genius.

- What advice would you give to others starting out? = Practice, practice, gig, gig, gig. Then put out an EP to get some buzz rolling, then gig, gig, gig. And practice.

- Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music? = Check out our website www.CactusPeach.com and also go to our bandcamp or our Facebook for *FREE* Downloads of our music! ...and "Like" us if yaz do. ; {*

- If you could play anywhere in the world or with anyone you wanted where and who would it be with? = Im gonna go with Queen in Deer Cave (one of the world's largest caves)... the acoustics would be epic.

- What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole? = At First Friday in San Antonio, Cactus Peach had a great show with a large crowd of enthusiastic folks. We sold a bunch of CDs and gave out even more. Then we were asked after the show to play a last minute show at a Venue around the corner called Boneshakers, that was also a great show with a crowd of encouraging peeps. The whole group ended the night at the Blue Star Brewery drinking home-brewed beers. Those were two really awesome and fun shows.

- Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about? = Cactus Peach is anticipating the release of our upcoming single & the Cosmic Cowboys, featuring brothers extraordinaire on the horn section and percussion Ryan and Dylan Neal.

- Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 years? = Hopefully to be one of the first bands to play on the Moon... with Thin Lizzy.
