Orly Interview @ Aj&dbs Music Webzine

Posted on January 25, 2012 at 1:35 AM

01 - Artist Name & Location = Orly (Somerville, MA)

02 - How did the project come into existence? = We (Orly&Yagel) both come from a musical background and we had an immediate connection when we first met and played together.

We started traveling together, writing songs together and basically falling in love..

After a year more or less, working and collecting different materials we then decided to record our songs- and to try to live out the dream!

03 - Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it? = We are Orly Forman (Vocals, Guitar, Piano) and Yagel Sulchiner (Guitar, Percussion). Duo, originally from Israel, now located in Boston, MA.

04 - How would you describe your sound/genre? = We believe it's different (which is always a good thing) and that can be defined as :

Easy listing, Indie Folk, Acoustic, that speaks out to all generations.

Our songs are original, honest, and full of passion. They share the highs of love, the pain of loss, the feelings of regret and self-doubt.

05 - What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have? = From an early age we were both separately engaged with music in many ways -

Orly started picking up on piano and guitar in her early childhood - writing melodies and lyrics. Performing in some cities in Israel as a singer songwriter.

Yagel was already drawn to drums and started practicing. In a later stage he also picked up the guitar - never officially, like Orly. Yagel was part of a rock band and with time started to write his own material.

06 - Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album? = Yes - We are working with a wonderful producer named Gabe Herman, who also recorded our first album, that was just released.

07 - Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music? = .As children, we were influenced by lots of different styles of music, that we heard at home:

Some examples - James Taylor, Eva Cassidy, Ray Charles, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchel, Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jeff Buckley and much more.

As we grew up our taste in music got stronger.

In the last few years we've been listening more to folk/indie music...

Fleet Foxes, Iron and Wine, Jose Gonzales....

08 - What advice would you give to others starting out? = we see ourselves as "starting out" so it would be bit difficult to come up with new advice to others...

But what we do feel strongly about is the love and belief towards your music and really just trying to be in the moment of creating it and presenting it...

we are sure you that you've heard it before, but keeping it real and being yourself would probably be the best way to go..

09 - Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music? = Well, there are many ways people can listen to our music.

We have our website: www.orlymusic.com - you can hear some samples there and of course purchase your own copy- through Cd Baby, itunes..

You can also always here some songs out of the album. You are welcomed to visit our BANDCAMP page where you can find 3 songs streaming for free...

or SIXTYONE... some online radio stations :)

10 - If you could play anywhere in the world or with anyone you wanted where and who would it be with? = Right now- we feel that to be an opening act for Fleet Foxes would be really cool and meaningful. We love the music!

It would be wonderful to travel to places we have never been in, to meet different people from new places- who appreciate who we are and our music.

To be able to deliver and present our melodies and lyrics to all..

We are open!

11 - What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole? = It was a great honor to win first prize in the folk genre in USA Songwriting Competition.

The song that won- Boy On A Hill, means a great deal to us, we went through a lot at the time, and that was one of the first songs we actually wrote together.

Each song really does have a special meaning to us..

12 - Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about? = Well, it looks like we are performing at SXSW, in which we are very excited about!

We are working on a new video that will be out soon, constantly writing new songs for our new album.

Just great things, lots of good vibes!

13 - Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 years? = Wow.. good question!

We would say, the main thing and most important, is that we are happy. That we feel fulfilled as people. We hope to be touring around a lot, and connecting with fans and people, learning constantly as we go along..

Being able to present our music and to continue to write better and better songs..
