Evan Wecksell (Comedian) Intervierw @ Aj&dbs

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 1:10 AM

01 - Artist Name & Location = Comedian Evan Wecksell - Los Angeles, CA

02 - How did the project come into existence? = I had been recording throughout my career and finally found a comedy label who was interested. So I took some old studio tracks, some old live tracks and recorded some fully arranged studio songs. I called the album 'LOL' because it paid homage to my 'boy on the internet' song (BonJovi219). I'm surprised other comics hadn't already chosen this as an album title, but I guess they weren't as corny as me. It's a great blend of material.

03 - Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it? = Just a funny man and his guitar.

04 - How would you describe your sound/genre? = I'd like to think I'm a funny Bon Jovi. My comedy songs have choruses and hooks that will get stuck in your head. In the first half of my career I was trying to sound like Stephen Lynch, but his voice is more angelic than mine. So I go with my inner Adam Sandler when I can.

05 - What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have? = I started comedy by studying at The Comic Strip in New York City under DF Sweedler. He let me see the structure behind comedy writing. For my stage presence and acting chops I credit the great Gary Imhoff with that. If you're in LA and what to take off as an artist, he's the guy. Regardless, most of my training came from learning as I go.

06 - Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album? = I brought old tracks that were produced by Tara Kijik and then added 'I Wanna Be Black' which Jamie Forrest brought to life. The main producer I've consistently used has been Keven Brennan. He just goes. I wrote a song "Brokeback Mountain" in 2006 and he added some great twang to it. "Attack of the Cougar" came off like something from the Violent Femmes. "Platonic Male Companion" has two versions. First Keven gave it an Edwin McCain feel - very unique for a comedy song - but then I mainstreamed it.

07 - Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music? = Bon Jovi has helped me write universally. Don't get too specific so only a select few of the audience know what I'm talking about. Dave Attell helps me to 'just say it' and be blunt. I also enjoy the bizarreness of Tom Green and Sacha Baron Cohen.

08 - What advice would you give to others starting out? = "You are your own product. Grow it, refine it, survey it, use your resources to improve it."

09 - Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music? = Here it is rapid fire:

  • official site - www.evanwecksell.com
  • alternative url - www.funnyevan.com
  • twitter - @evanwecksell
  • facebook - www.facebook.com/funnyevan
  • reverbnation - www.reverbnation.com/evanwecksell
  • sonicbids - www.sonicbids.com/evanwecksell

10 - If you could play anywhere in the world or with anyone you wanted where and who would it be with? = I would love to play back home in the tri-state area and go from small to big venues: NYCB Theatre @ Westbury --> Jones Beach Theater --> Madison Square Garden --> MetLife Stadium

My dream is to open for Bon Jovi, convince to write funny with me and then I'd like to jive with Adam Sandler.

11 - What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole? = I met my wife at our local train station on July 24, 2004. Everything changed after that. Everything improved. Two people from the same high school, one year apart, who never met but if we had Facebook back then we would have 200 mutual friends.

12 - Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about? = The direct link to the calendar is at: www.evanwecksell.com/ew_calendar.html. Will have a tour press release soon. Big dates includes Feb 8 @ University of Vermont and February 23 @ Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

13 - Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 years? = As Mitch Hedberg would say, "I will be celebrating the 5 year anniversary of when you asked me this question." In addition, you'll see me having taken over more spheres of the globe. I'll be small screen, big screen, live stage, helping artists and exploiting my child to no end.
