Eyeswide (Neil Crowe) Barrie, ON Canada
Q. How did the project come into existence?
It was a quick transition from practicing cover songs, at open mic nights, to writing and performing originals. I got bored of playing what everyone else played. Plus, it kind of sucked when you prepared to play a song and someone would play it before you. Playng my originals meant no one would mess up my set by playing a song before I could.
Q.Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it?
Neil Crowe, Vocals, Guitar, Suitcase Kick drum and tambourine. Occasional live members are Andrew Richards, drums, and Aaron Gifkins, lead guitar.
Q How would you describe your sound/genre?
It’s upbeat acoustic rock, with an aggressive edge.
Q. What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have?
In high school I started out on bass. I got a few lessons in the beginning, but mainly had the teacher show me Les Claypool riffs
Q. Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album?
The album “In Three Days” was recorded at Chalet Studios, with Theo Posthumus, I came in with the songs and he made some suggetions and tweaks. Real easy going guy. For a few tracks I recorded at Red Sonic Studios with Rob Sheele. I said, do what you want with these. And he kept them basically what they were with just a few added effects and distortion
Q. Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music?
Since I started on the Bass I like a lot of funky riffs. Primus and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Were a big influence. But The Dave Matthews Band got me to pick up a guitar. I was a big fan of his style. Now I really like bands with quirky sounds and honest vocals like Modest Mouse, Cake, The Arctic Monkey’s
Q.What advice would you give to others starting out?
You will do it all yourself. Everything. But knowing this, at the same time ask for help, sometimes it will happen but be ready to do it all your self.
Q. Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music?
I’ve got the Facebook going. Myspace, Reverb Nation, Jango, and CBC Radio 3. www.eyeswide.ca for now points to the Myspace page but very, very soon it will be sending fans to the Eyeswide website!
Q. If you could play anywhere in the world or with anyone you wanted where and who would it be with?
I think I would like to go back to Australia. Such a great country, Most likely in Sydney. Or maybe a smaller city like Byron Bay. But I’d take Zues’ drummer Rob Drake something about his style I really like to watch. ▪ Q. What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole? ▪ Booking a tour in the UK was awesome. But playing in front of 6000 people during the Earth Hour Music Fest in Barrie was a great feeling. So many people!
Q. Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about?
CD release party is happening Dec 16th in Barrie, ON then an East coast Canada Tour with Julian Michaud of Richmond Switch in Feb 2010.
Q. Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 years?
I hope I am at a point where I am getting some offers for gigs and it’s not always me hounding venues for a show. As well as touring more countries with 3 CD’s under my belt.
