Robert Graham Interview @ Aj&dbs

        Robert Graham - Brockville Ontario

How did the project come into existence?  Having toured the UK with Canadian band TANGLEFOOT in the summer of 2008 I suddenly could not live with myself any longer without recording some of the many half finished songs I had in my head!

So after returning from the first tour - I wrote and recorded my debut record "Storm in a Teacup" over a 13 month period - and released it in June of 2009 - jist before touring with the band again.

Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it?  "Storm in a Teacup" features some great musicians including TEDDY KUMPEL (Rickie Lee Jones, Feist, Trent Reznor), ANTON FIER (Herbie Hancock, the Lounge Lizards), ROB JOST (Tony Scherr Trio, Ursa Minor), and TONY SCHERR (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones), ERIC SCHENKMAN (Spin Doctors), FORD PIER (DOA, the Rheostatics), not to mention Kingston Ontario's own Andy Love, Dan Charbonneau, Alec Barken, and Eli and John Abrams of the fabulous ABRAMS BROTHERS.

It was produced by CHRIS BROWN (Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Kate Fenner, DJ Logic, Tragically Hip)

How would you describe your sound/genre? I find this question hard because my songs never sound the same. There is elements of pop, rock, jazz, soul, blues and dance. It's a very eclectic album of songs.

"Ingenious, sophisticated pop music with more twists and turns then your average Agatha Christie thriller" is how BBC Middlesborough put it!

What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have?  I was trained classically on piano between the ages of nine and nineteen. I have played all kinds of music in all kinds of situations - including dressing up as a gorilla and doing singing telegrams ("gorilla - grams")

I play music all day every day.

Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album?  I am working with Chris again in bits and pieces - on my second record and also a musical. Stay tuned!

Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music?  There are so many bands I love - the Police, the Pretenders, CSNY, The GoBetweens, Cold Chisel, Dragon, the Blue Nile, ELO, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Joe Jackson - just off the top of my head. All of them have influenced this record and my songwriting.

What advice would you give to others starting out?  Do it for love. But if you believe in your songs - do your best to let the world hear them. Don't discount the things you have already achieved.

Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music?  My website is www.robertgraham.org.

If you could play anywhere in the world or with anyone you wanted where and who would it be with?  I would love to do a show with Jackson Browne. Anywhere. Lyrically he can't be beaten.

What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole? Personally - the birth of my two childen.

Musically - seeing my life long ambition of recording a record come true

Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about?  I am moving to Toronto at the end of August and will be starting a new band there. Very excited about that.

Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 years?  I would love to have another record under my belt. I would love to continue my successes as a songwriter and also continue my work in the professional theatre world.
